Beyond the Booth: Building a Malaysian House of Beauty

ANNUR MIHAS Booth, 2026

There are certain compliments that stay with us. Not necessarily because of the words themselves, but because of who said them, the circumstances in which they were spoken, and what they quietly affirmed. For us, one such moment unfolded at MIHAS 2026.

Two gentlemen were making their way towards the ANNUR booth. We had never met them before. As they approached, one of them began with an unexpectedly serious expression.

“I want to tell you something, and it’s coming from me, and I want you to hear me.”

For a brief moment, we anticipated criticism.

When you build something of your own and place it before thousands of people, you inevitably learn to welcome scrutiny. Every detail, from the formulation of a product to the presentation of a space, becomes an invitation for interpretation. Praise and criticism are equally possible. What followed, however, was entirely unexpected. “Your booth is the nicest one here.” They explained that ANNUR had caught their attention from a distance. Its presentation had compelled them to walk across the exhibition hall simply to experience it more closely. Then came another revelation. They were from France. They described how our booth reminded them of the elegant storefronts found along the streets of their home country. We immediately thought of the understated sophistication of French maisons such as Celine, Chanel and Dior — houses whose identities extend far beyond the products they create.

“Keep it up,” they told us. “You’ll definitely go far.”

It was a brief exchange, yet its significance extended well beyond the exhibition floor.

France already occupied a meaningful place in ANNUR's story. Our journey into perfumery had taken us thousands of kilometres from Malaysia to Grasse, widely regarded as the perfume capital of the world. There, at Fragonard, we immersed ourselves in the art and discipline of fragrance creation, eventually earning a diploma in perfumery. When we shared this connection, the conversation shifted. The gentlemen appeared genuinely surprised that a Malaysian Muslim-owned beauty brand had travelled to France to study the craft at its source. Their curiosity soon turned into encouragement. They urged us to continue developing ANNUR, even suggesting future collaborations with French chemists and formulators to create products capable of bringing something distinctive to the Malaysian beauty landscape. What began as an encounter with two strangers became a conversation about possibility. There was something particularly meaningful about receiving such recognition from French visitors. France has long influenced the global vocabulary of beauty, fragrance, craftsmanship and luxury. To have individuals from that cultural landscape recognise a familiar sense of refinement in a Malaysian brand was, for us, an extraordinary affirmation. Yet another detail made the encounter especially memorable. They were Muslim, too.

A Brand Without Boundaries

ANNUR has always been a Muslim-owned brand. That identity is integral to our values, but it has never been intended to define the limits of our audience or ambitions. We believe values should provide a foundation, not impose a ceiling. A brand can be modest without being conventional. It can remain principled while embracing innovation. It can honour faith and tradition while presenting itself with sophistication, confidence and international relevance. Above all, it can belong to people from every walk of life. Interestingly, earlier that same morning, a reporter had visited our booth for an interview. Her opening question was deceptively simple:

“Why is branding so important?”

Our immediate response was equally straightforward. Without a brand, how will people know you? Yet the question stayed with us long after the interview ended. Because branding, in its truest sense, extends far beyond a logo, a colour palette, packaging or an aesthetically considered exhibition booth. Branding is the ability to communicate a philosophy before there is an opportunity to explain it. It is the impression that precedes an introduction, the expectation that forms before a product is experienced, and the identity that remains long after an encounter has ended. For ANNUR, branding is also an opportunity to challenge perceptions. We want to demonstrate that a Malaysian Muslim-owned company can be contemporary, beautifully considered and globally competitive without compromising the principles upon which it was founded. We have also never believed that the people behind a company must necessarily become its most recognisable feature.

We would rather the products speak.

We would rather the quality speak.

We would rather the formulations, the experience, the packaging and the identity of ANNUR establish their own recognition, independent of the individuals who created them.

The brand itself should be the frontliner. Because while personalities may introduce a business to the world, it is the integrity of the brand that allows it to endure.

Where Tradition Meets Modernity

At the heart of ANNUR lies a philosophy that is both uncomplicated and deeply intentional: modesty, modernity and tradition need not exist in opposition. For generations, people turned to nature for nourishment, care and wellbeing. Botanical extracts, flowers, herbs and oils were not fashionable discoveries or marketing narratives. They were part of everyday life, passed down through observation, experience and inherited knowledge. Nature was, in many ways, humanity's first pharmacy. As industries evolved, innovation brought remarkable advancements in science, formulation and manufacturing. Yet somewhere along the way, complexity increasingly became synonymous with progress, while traditional knowledge was sometimes dismissed as something belonging to the past. We believe there is room for a more considered approach. Progress does not have to mean abandoning what came before us.

For ANNUR, the future of skincare, haircare, body care, cosmetics and fragrance lies in bringing these worlds together — allowing contemporary research and formulation expertise to inform products while remaining respectful of the botanical ingredients and traditional practices that have shaped generations. This is not about romanticising the past or rejecting modern science. It is about recognising that innovation and heritage can enrich one another. That the most meaningful form of modernity may not always be the invention of something entirely new, but the ability to reinterpret something valuable for the world we live in today.

From Grasse to a Malaysian Vision

Our journey to Grasse was never simply an overseas experience or an opportunity to obtain a qualification. It was an investment in the future of ANNUR. Studying perfumery at Fragonard offered more than technical knowledge. It provided a deeper understanding of the patience, discipline and cultural continuity required to build a respected house of fragrance. In Grasse, craftsmanship is not merely an industry. It is part of a living heritage, cultivated and refined across generations. Being surrounded by that history encouraged us to imagine a future that, even today, remains wonderfully ambitious.

What if Malaysia could one day have its own Fragonard?

Not a replica of a French institution.

Not an imitation of European luxury.

But something distinctly and confidently Malaysian.

A house of beauty and wellbeing shaped by our climate, our botanical heritage, our cultural diversity, our knowledge and our traditions — yet recognised internationally for the quality of its products, the integrity of its craftsmanship and the strength of its identity.

We believe Malaysia has stories worth telling through beauty. Our natural environment, inherited practices and regional ingredients offer a rich foundation from which meaningful innovation can emerge. The opportunity lies not in borrowing another country's identity, but in developing the confidence and expertise to articulate our own. This is the ambition we hold for ANNUR. To create something that feels at home in Malaysia while possessing the quality, refinement and cultural depth to stand alongside established international houses.

Building Beyond Ourselves

As ANNUR continues to grow, our ambitions have gradually evolved beyond the immediate realities of running a business. Naturally, revenue matters. Growth matters. Commercial sustainability matters. But these are not the only measures by which we hope to define success. We want to build a company that can eventually exist beyond the people who founded it. A house with a philosophy strong enough to be understood, preserved and developed by those who come after us. Perhaps one day, our children will walk through ANNUR's doors and encounter a company that existed long before they understood the meaning of entrepreneurship. Perhaps they will grow up observing its evolution, learning not only how products are developed or businesses are managed, but also why certain values deserve to be protected. Perhaps, one day, they will lead it alongside us and perhaps, eventually, they will lead it without us. That is the kind of continuity we hope to create. Not simply the transfer of ownership, but the inheritance of knowledge, responsibility and purpose. For us, generational prosperity is about more than financial security. It is also about preserving the intellectual, cultural and practical foundations upon which something meaningful has been built.

As conversations surrounding sustainability, responsible consumption and the origins of everyday products continue to evolve, we believe knowledge of nature and its responsible application will become increasingly valuable. There is much to learn from the generations before us, just as there is much to discover through the science of today. ANNUR's responsibility is to explore that intersection thoughtfully — preserving what is meaningful, questioning what can be improved and ensuring that tradition remains relevant rather than becoming merely symbolic.

A business may begin with a product.

A legacy begins with a philosophy.

The Power of a Silent Introduction

Perhaps this is why our encounter with the two French gentlemen at MIHAS has remained so vivid. They believed they were complimenting an exhibition booth. For us, they were affirming a direction. Without knowing the story behind ANNUR, the education that shaped our approach to fragrance, or the long-term ambitions we hold for the company, they had recognised something in its presentation that felt familiar, considered and compelling.

That recognition was particularly meaningful because it happened before a single word about our journey had been exchanged and perhaps that is the essence of branding.

The silent introduction before the conversation begins. It is the feeling a brand creates before its story is told. The quiet promise communicated through its presence, its details and its sense of purpose. When the story eventually catches up with that feeling, everything should fall into place. ANNUR is still evolving. There is much to learn, formulate, refine and discover. Our ambitions remain greater than our present achievements, and we recognise that building a lasting institution requires patience, consistency and an unwavering commitment to improvement.

But the direction has become increasingly clear. We aspire to build a Malaysian house of beauty and wellbeing that is modest in its values, modern in its expression, grounded in nature and traditional wisdom, and confident enough to take its place on the world stage.

A house that does not need to abandon its origins to earn international recognition.

A house where craftsmanship is cultivated, knowledge is preserved and beauty is approached with both intention and integrity and if, one day, ANNUR becomes something our children inherit, develop and eventually pass on to another generation, perhaps its greatest contribution will not be a perfume, a serum or a cream.

It will be the knowledge that endures.

The values that remain and the philosophy that continues to guide the house long after its founders have stepped away. Ultimately, we are not simply building a beauty brand. We are building something worth passing on.
